Kelly Friedlander Appointed to the NC State Rehabilitation Council

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Kelly Friedlander, CEO of Community Bridges, to the North Carolina State Rehabilitation Council (SRC) by the Office of Senator Phil Berger. This significant appointment underscores Kelly's profound dedication and extensive expertise in the realm of disability advocacy, particularly for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

As a key advisory body, The NC State Rehabilitation Council (SRC) works with the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS) to increase opportunities for competitive integrated employment and community inclusion for North Carolinians with disabilities. The SRC provides a formal mechanism for all North Carolinians to influence the direction of VR programs, policies and services in the state.

Kathie Smith, MS, LCMHC, CPM, Division Director at NC Vocational Rehabilitation Services, expressed her enthusiasm about Kelly's appointment: "DVRS is so excited to have Kelly Friedlander as a part of the NCDVRS State Rehabilitation Council. Kelly brings a wealth of advocacy, knowledge, and experience, especially on behalf of people with I/DD and other complex barriers to competitive integrated employment and independence. The goal of the SRC is to continue to make the NCDVRS better, and I know with Kelly as a part of the team, we will do just that!"

The SRC comprises appointees from the Governor, the President Pro Tem of the Senate, and the Speaker of the House. Its diverse membership includes individuals with disabilities, their family members, advocates, and representatives from various sectors, all working collectively to enhance the lives of people with disabilities in North Carolina. Kelly joins this collaborative team, dedicated to advancing the Council's goals and improving the lives of individuals with disabilities across the state.

Community Bridges is a purpose-driven organization committed to building a more equitable and inclusive world. It actively involves individuals, providers, state systems, and stakeholders in a concerted effort to advocate strategically, develop impactful policies, and provide comprehensive technical assistance. A core aspect of Community Bridges' approach is valuing and incorporating the diverse experiences and voices of people with I/DD, ensuring that they play a central role in shaping a more inclusive and just society for everyone.
